Luis Cañas winery, located in the Rioja Alavesa has more than two centuries devoted to viticulture. It is a tradition and a way of life that is reflected in their wines.
In the more recent years of this long journey they have managed to become one of the best wineries in the area of the DOC Rioja, thereby collecting numerous awards and accolades.
The new phase started 30 years ago when Luis Cañas decided to convince his parents to move from a production based on young wines and improve the quality of the wines.
They now enjoy exceptional quality, combining the tradition of knowledge of the trade with modernity and the pursuit of excellence in a great Rioja.
They have 350 hectares of vineyards planted with Garnacha, Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura and Malvasia vines aged between 30 and 60 years and divided into 850 plots worked individually and in which all the work is done by hand. They are true craftsmen of wine. The vineyards are characterized by being on calcareous clay soils of low fertility mostly on hillsides or terraces and situated at an altitude of between 450 and 600 meters above sea level.
A classic blend from Rioja. The Viura variety blended with a touch of Malvasia to give it more depth. The palate is refreshingly zingy with apple and tropical fruits with just a hint of honey balanced by a nice lime acidity.
A wine which stands out for its exceptional price and quality. The grapes used for this wine come from vineyards of 30 to 35 years of age, aged for 12 months in both French and American oak casks. We call it a modern Classic Rioja where the oak is a fine supplement to the high quality grapes, well integrated without dominating the fruit. A small amount...
This skilled winemaker, Luis Cañas, has managed to preserve the natural aromatic freshness of the Viura grape, adding the Malvasia grape for more aroma and texture. It is a wine that gives you an appetite. It has been enhanced by 4 months ageing on the lees in very fine grained wood, just enough to balance with the fruit, making it very versatile with food.
The grapes used for Luis Cañas Reserva wines come from vineyards of apx.40 years of age, producing only 5000 kg. per hectar. Actually it's a very versatile wine with a fresh character and lots of fruit which combines with a lot of dishes. Try it with meat, game, fish, cheese or even chocolate
This wine was produced for the first time in 1994 with the intention of producing something special, different from the traditional Reserva wine. And that was certainly accomplished; The wine is completely different from the others under the same classification. It's more intense in colour, with explosive aromas and powerful entry. The grapes used for...
This is an unusual Gran Reserva wine. It bears the name but is not at all traditional in style. In the classic Gran Reserva the color is slightly brown with an orange rim, this one is ruby red, brilliant and clear. And in the classic styled wines the fruit barely appeared, but as the fruit is the identity of the Luis Cañas wines, this one has lots of it...
Bodegas Luis Canas make this Rioja from vines over 60 years old and limit the yield to only three bunches (racimos) per vine. The grapes are hand picked, thoroughly sorted and then fermented in French oak vats. The malo-lactic takes place in new French oak barrels before racking into into more new French oak barrels for ageing.
