Vinos de España - Rioja

BARÓN DE LEY is a winery which was founded in 1985 by a small group of prestigious Rioja professionals who decided to create a project which was unique at that time in the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja: a winery modelled on the Médoc châteaux, bringing together all the conditions that make a wine a work of art. With this objective, the creators of BARÓN DE LEY acquired the Imas estate, within the boundaries of Mendavia and on the left bank of the River Ebro.

It is an exceptional place for growing vines due to its climatic conditions and the characteristics of its soils, on which 90 hectares of vines were planted on the grounds on a 16th century monastery. A look inside the old monastery reveals immaculate and efficient facilities, housing high-tech temperature controlled steel tanks, 10,000 new oak barrels, and a 5-million-bottle cellar.

In 2004, the winery purchased an additional 500 parcels of land, resulting in a 1200 acre estate that has been planted with Tempranillo as well as Garnacha, Graciano and experimental varieties such as Maturana. This project is a strong testament to the estate’s desire to continue to control all levels of winemaking, from vine to bottle.

This is a classic unaged white Rioja. The grapes are grown to provide below average yields and are hand-picked and cold macerated before pressing for maximum aroma. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks where the wine is given a little lees contact for a rounder feel before the two grape varieties are blended together, stabilised and bottled.

The bodega produces two styles of rosé, and this is the traditional deeper-coloured style fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks with longer contact with the grape skins. This offers more depth of flavour and colour. The Tempranillo gives the wine structure while the Granacha gives it a wonderful juiciness making it extremely versatile...

In the style of Provence, Baron de Ley has produced a surprisingly good new wine, "Rosado de Lágrima". Lagrima means tear, implying very gentle extraction during fermentation. Delicate in color, aroma and freshness, its personality is very Mediterranean and it is a perfect summer wine.

From the beautiful bodegas of Barón de Ley, this is a semi-sweet wine made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes in state of the art conditions. A long, slow, cold fermentation is halted by dropping the temperature to 4ᴼ below zero while it still retains natural grape sugars and a comparatively low level of alcohol. This process also retains the fragrant primary...

The Graciano grape, acclaimed and rare, was always an important component in the classic Rioja wine. Barón de Ley have planted 50 hectares of this grape in the Los Almendros vineyard, 460 m. above sea level. The shades of violet in its colour , fresh nose, subtle tannins, good acidity and strong character make this a unique wine.

Taken from the recently rediscovered variety Maturana. Like many grape varieties it all but disappeared at the time of phylloxera. It comes from vineyards located in "Villa Alegría" and is the first major plantation of Maturana to have been done in Rioja. This makes the wine very interesting as one is effectively drinking history.

Grenache is perfectly matched to dry and continental conditions of the high valleys. This wine is a tribute to a grape that has always been part of La Rioja vineyards. Its lush fruit and late maturing, gives the wine aromas of red fruit and silky tannins.

A white reserva from Baron de Ley. A complex wine, vivacious and lasting. Its elaboration is unique since each grape is elaborated separately and, later, it is left to age the coupage during a year in barrels of American oak. A special and unique wine.
