Vinos de España - Castilla y León

Clunia is a dream-come-true project.

The recent history of Clunia was born in the late 90s. Clunia is an innovative winemaking project, a dream and a need to make wine that reflects the virtues of extremes. No additives. Wine from a land with centuries of experience. An arid land with a rough composition, at an extreme altitude and in a harsh climate.

The Clunia vineyards are located in the province of Burgos, Castilla y León at an altitude of between 900 and 1,100 metres above the sea level. Currently two grape varieties are grown: three hectares of Syrah, and 10 hectares of Tempranillo. The organic composition of this land is very poor, these are limestone, clay and sandy soils with pebbles and limestone loams which allow for optimal drainage, thus limiting production considerably –between 3,000 and 4,000Kg/hectare. The singular character of this terroir results in wines with a unique personality, only changing slightly according to the subtle variations determined by the soil of each vineyard. The cellar is situated in the small town Coruña del Conde. It has a maximum capacity for 100,000 kilos of grapes.

Seemingly determined to show that bigger can be better, Bodegas Principe de Viana was founded in 1983. The firm is dedicated to quality, from vineyard to table, and takes its stewardship of the land very seriously. Headquartered in Navarra, it controls 1,700 acres across north central Spain and its three wineries currently produce a jaw-dropping 1.2 million cases of wine each year. Their “Clunia” label, which focuses on wines from the Castilla-León region, released it first vintage in 2010 and has received rave reviews from the international press, for both quality and value.

A wine with a personality of its own. Clunia Tempranillo is made from grapes grown in a plot called El Gerbal, at 950 m. altitude and in extreme conditions in Castilla-Leon. A very special wine that you can't fail to enjoy. Thanks to a triple selection of the grapes during the manual harvesting, passing through double selection of bunches, and then a...

Clunia Syrah comes from the vineyard La Encina, of only 2.89 hectares, planted at the end of the 1990s at an altitude of 900 meters on calcareous soils. This is a terroir exposed to the elements, with extreme climatology, very cold winters and very hot summers. At Clunia, the care and correct management of the vineyard play a fundamental role in the result.
